Towergate Insurance Brokers has over 50 years’ experience within the agricultural insurance arena and plans to use the summer shows to demonstrate their expertise while meeting potential new clients and building the Towergate brand.

One of the main topics for discussion at the shows will be accidents and fatalities. According to the HSE, between 1st April 2018 and 13th March 2019 there were 31 fatalities within agriculture, more than any other industry; nine deaths involving cattle; seven struck by moving vehicles; four struck by overturning vehicles; and five falls from height.

Judy Harris, Sales Development Manager for Towergate said: “Improving farm safety must be high on the agenda for all farmers to reduce the number of families left devastated by these terrible accidents. It will also help protect the business itself which will often suffer, and the business owners who might well find themselves facing prosecution at an already difficult time. All farm owners need to carefully consider the impact of an accident and seek professional insurance advice beyond Public, Product and Employers liability insurances.”

Another major issue within agriculture which Towergate hopes to address is underinsurance; something that can have terrible consequences for farm owners but that is very simple to rectify.

Judy said: “As with other types of insurance, people often undervalue their property or business. It’s vital that people carry out a full inventory to ensure that everything is covered. For example, if a barn were to catch fire, would every single item in it be insured? If not, you would very quickly find yourself out of pocket when trying to replace like with like.”

With Brexit uncertainty looming large, many farmers are looking at ways to modernise and diversify. While this is a very positive step, Judy suggests people take care to ensure that they are protecting their livelihood.

Judy said: “Many farmers have seen the benefits of drones to monitor livestock and keep an eye on their land. However, they are subject to the same legal obligations as other drone users and I would urge caution. Likewise, if a farmer decides to start renting out land or rooms for tourism, they need to be very careful that their insurance covers them for these changes. I would advise any farmers in doubt to contact their insurance provider for advice.”

This summer, Towergate will be at the Royal Cornwall Show, the National Sheep Association South West at Umberleigh, Honiton, The Dairy Show, Dunster and North Devon.
